Writing Introduction
IELTS General
IELTS general test consists of two tasks. It is suggested that candidates spend about 20 minutes on Task 1, which requires them to write at least 150 words, and 40 minutes on Task 2, which requires them to write at least 250 words.
Remember, task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score. Therefore, it is highly recommended to start with task 2.
In Task 1, candidates are asked to respond to a given situation with a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. They are assessed on their ability to engage in personal correspondence, elicit and provide general factual information, express needs, wants, likes and dislikes, express opinions, complaints, etc.
In Task 2, candidates are presented with a point of view, argument or problem. They are assessed on their ability to provide general factual information, outline a problem and present a solution, present and justify an opinion, and to evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or arguments.

IELTS academic test consists of two tasks. It is suggested that candidates spend about 20 minutes on Task 1, which requires them to write at least 150 words, and 40 minutes on Task 2, which requires them to write at least 250 words.

Task 1 requires candidates to look at a diagram or some data (in a graph, table or chart) and to present the information in their own words. They are assessed on their ability to organise, present and possibly compare data, and are required to describe the stages of a process, describe an object or event, or explain how something works.
In Task 2, candidates are presented with a point of view, argument or problem. They are assessed on their ability to present a solution to the problem, present and justify an opinion, compare and contrast evidence and opinions, and to evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or arguments.
Difference in Writing Task 1 for Academic & General IETLS
Writing Task 1 in General IELTS is different from Academic IELTS.
- In General IETLS, task 1 requires you to write a letter within 20 minutes and it should contain at least 150 words. In following lessons, you’ll learn how to write a letter and some tips and tricks.
- In Academic IELTS, task 1 requires you to write a report on a given graph, diagram, chart or a photograph. The allotted time for academic writing task is also 20 minutes and minimum words limit is also the same i.e. 150 words. - If you don’t know the topic precisely, that’s ok. Because, it is not a test of science or Maths, it’s a test of your English, therefore, write as directed and meet the assessment criteria.
