What is IELTS?

IELTS is an English language test for study, migration or work. Over three million people take this test every year. IELTS is accepted by more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools and immigration bodies around the world.

IELTS test types

IELTS has two types: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

Both tests assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS Academic
  • The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education).

 

  • You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.

 

  • You can choose whether to take IELTS Academic on paper, on computer or online at home or other suitable location.
IELTS General Training
  • The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those applying to study below degree level.

 

  • It can also be taken for work experience or other employment training.

 

  • The test features everyday English language skills that you will need in social and workplace environments.

 

  • IELTS General Training is available to take on paper and on computer only.
Which IELTS test type is right for me?
  • If you want to move to an English-speaking country to study, then you should take the IELTS Academic test.

 

  • For work or immigration, the IELTS General Training test is recommended.

 

  • This course covers both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training exam preparation. So, you’re 100% covered. 🙂
Test format
  • For Academic and General Training you take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests.

 

  • The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.

 

  • The Speaking test, however, may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other tests. If you booked IELTS Online, your Speaking test will usually take place before your other tests.
Total Test Time

The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes and this only includes Listening, Reading and Writing. Speaking test duration is different which lasts for 11-14 minutes.

You will clearly see that Reading and Writing module are separate for IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. So, please choose your respective module to know more about that particular test format you’re interested in.

Listening

Listening Test Format

Paper Based:

Total time: 40 minutes (Test time: 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer answers to answer sheet)

No. of questions: 40

Computer Based:

Total time: 30 minutes. Extra 10 minutes are not given as you'll type answer directly on the computer.

Academic Reading

Reading Test Format

Paper Based:

Total time: 60 minutes

No. of questions: 40
Format: Three reading passages with a variety of questions using a number of task types.

Computer Based:

No difference.

General Training Reading

General Reading Test Format

Paper Based:

Total time: 60 minutes

No. of questions: 40
Format: There are three sections. Section 1 may contain two or three short texts or several shorter texts. Section 2 comprises two texts. In Section 3, there is one long text.

Computer Based:

No difference.

Recording Answers for Reading Tests

  • Test takers are required to transfer their answers to an answer sheet during the time allowed for the test.

  • No extra time is allowed for transfer.

  • Care should be taken when writing answers on the answer sheet as poor spelling and grammar are PENALIZED.

  • Academic Writing

    Academic Writing Test Format

    Paper Based:

    Total time: 60 minutes

    No. of questions: 2
    Format: There are two writing tasks. In Task 1, test takers should describe some visual information. In Task 2, they need to write an essay.

    Computer Based:

    No difference.

    General Training Writing

    General Writing Test Format

    Paper Based:

    Total time: 60 minutes

    No. of questions: 2
    Format: There are two writing tasks. In Task 1, test takers need to write a letter. In Task 2, they need to write an essay.

    Computer Based:

    No difference.

    Speaking

    Speaking Test Format

    Total time: 11-14 minutes


    Format: The Speaking test consists of an oral interview between the test takers' and an examiner. All Speaking tests are recorded.

    It is a three part test. In part 1, the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself. In part 2, you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. In Part 3, you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2.
