Introduction to Listening Module

In this lesson, we will learn about what you should expect in listening module of IELTS test.  We will also explain various question types that you’ll see on listening exam.  Question types are also known as Task types.

Listening test consists of four parts, each with ten questions.

The first two parts are concerned with social needs. The first part is a conversation between two speakers and the second part is a monologue.

The final two parts are concerned with situations related to educational or
training contexts. The third part is a conversation between up to four people and the fourth part is a monologue.

A variety of question types is used, including: multiple choice, matching, plan/map/
diagram labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion,
summary completion, sentence completion and short-answer questions.

Candidates hear the recording once only and answer the questions as they listen. In paper based IELTS, ten (10) minutes are allowed at the end for candidates to transfer their answers to the answer sheet. In computer-based IELTS, no dedicated 10 minutes  are given in the end. You’ll be given some time before the recording plays and some time after the recording ends.

2- Answer Sheet

In this lesson, you’ll learn about answer sheet and how to use it.

Key Points

  • Listening lasts for 30 minutes and you’ll be given 10 minutes afterwards to transfer your answer to the answer sheet.
  • While transferring, make sure to check spellings.
  • In computer based IELTS, you will NOT be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to answer sheet.  You’ll have to answer questions as you listen.
  • After the end of each part of the Listening test you will have some time to review your answers.
  • At the end of the Listening test, you will have 2 minutes to check your answers.
  • Of course, you’ll have some time before and after the recording which you should use effectively to understand the demand of the questions and highlight keywords.
  • In computer based IELTS, you can use right click to highlight a keyword.

Top Tip

You'll be given some time to look at the questions before recording will begin to play. You should use this time to guess and predict the answers before you listen. For example, for fill in the blank questions, you should guess what word can fill the gap in the question?
